I recently had the pleasure of meeting Nelle, a very special dog with soulful eyes, a winning smile and a friendly, exuberant demeanor. She was a charmer, to say the least. Nelle’s mom and dad wanted to take a quick over night trip but needed someone to feed her, take her for walks, give her lots of loving attention, as well as some nice belly rubs. Nelle greeted me at the door with tail wagging and a happy smile each time I came and she would joyfully run around with a stuffed javelina in her mouth. We enjoyed going for walks and also watching the sun rise early in the morning – just hanging out, listening to the birds and savoring the day. She is truly a one-of-a-kind dog.
I have been walking dogs for 6 years now and I never get tired of it. My clients range from tiny Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Shih Tzus, to large Golden Retrievers and Yellow Labs. Of course, there is always the lovable mutt, who always has a great personality and winning ways.
There is never a day that goes by that I don’t feel really lucky to be working in a profession where my clients give unconditional love, and never complain. We are outside walking, me and my furry friends – through various neighborhoods, taking in all our surroundings – a fun daily excursion! No matter what the weather, we go walking. I’ve learned to appreciate, snow, sleet, rain and of course, those beautiful sunny days which are few and far between in Minnesota. There is no weather that can’t be tolerated if you dress appropriately. Like mom always said, “make sure you wear a hat and mittens.”
I have also learned that dogs and cats are the most appreciative beings on the face of the planet. Pets will always give love and always accept you, just the way you are. Because of this, I know that I have the best job in the world.
It never ceases to amaze me, the resiliency of dogs. Here in Minnesota, we have been having some of the coldest temperatures of the decade. Minus 10 and 20 below zero, for weeks on end! On top of that, we have about 3 feet of snow on the ground! It has been challenging to walk dogs, to say the least. My customers all live within the same area, Lakeville, Prior Lake, Eagan and Savage. Suffice it to say, that I feel very lucky that I can wear layered clothing. But, all the dogs I walk, have nothing more than a stylish fur coat on. Yes, they all seem to enjoy being outside, no matter what the weather. We have a lot to learn from our good friend, the dog: Enjoy life no matter what the weather and just roll with the snow.
Jasper has a kind and gentle spirit. Even though he needed help eating, he was always purring, sweet and loving, throughout the entire process.
I had the pleasure of taking care of Jasper, a beautiful black cat with a silky smooth coat. His mom and dad were leaving for an out of town Christmas get-together. They were tentative about leaving Jasper though. You see, Jasper was not eating enough, and had to be fed two times a day with a syringe. I went over to my new client’s house, and learned how to feed Jasper. Everything went smoothly, while they were gone and I gave them daily updates on Jasper’s health. It turns out that Jasper was in great spirits and eating well. He even emptied out his regular food dish. Everyone had a very Merry Christmas, especially Jasper.
Meet Daisy, a Golden Retriever from Lakeville, MN. I am taking care of Daisy this weekend while her parents are out of town.
I am also taking care of her two siblings Tiger and Lily. Tiger is a tabby cat and Lily is a calico cat. Both cats are beautiful and sweet.
Daisy goes on three walks a day. I come to her house three times a day to feed her, walk her and play with her. I also make sure that Tiger and Lily are happy and well fed and clean their potty box every time I come.
Daisy is a very good walker! I check on her first thing in the morning, mid-afternoon and early evening. Every time I see her, her tail is wagging; she is smiling and she is as happy as can be. She loves her treats too!
I think Daisy is an early bird. As we were walking this morning, the birds were chirping and there was a coolness in the air. Daisy did lots of sniffing and checking out of plants and nature. She seemed in her element when she is walking.
I am so happy I got to take care of such a wonderful dog and 2 great kitties.
When I first started walking Minnie, she was a little puppy with a sweet, shy demeanor. Goldendoodles are a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, which is sometimes referred to as a “Designer Dog” mix. But Minnie is no snob, and prefers to hang out with us regular people.
Minnie definitely has the best attributes of each breed. She has a friendly, playful personality with a beautiful, curly coat and a face that melts you when she looks at you with those soulful eyes. I just looked up some facts about Goldendoodles and I found this line very interesting: “The Encyclopædia Britannica traces the term “designer dog” to the late 20th century, when breeders began to cross purebred poodles with other purebred breeds in order to obtain a dog with the poodles’ hypoallergenic coat, along with various desirable characteristics from other breeds.” Yes, Minnie does have a very nice coat indeed…being that she has naturally curly blond hair!
Tina Albright, owner of Minnie, recently sent me some great photos of Minnie which I would like to share. Minnie is definitely a dog with a winning personality!
Welcome Graeme and Lilith! I recently had the pleasure of taking care of 2 wonderful new kitties; Graeme, an orange tabby cat and Lilith, a darling white and orange cat. Both were very friendly and outgoing and had energy to spare! They both greeted me at the front door each visit and proceeded to follow me around. I did manage to capture them both in a state of rest and relaxation, after much romping around, playing and eating their dinner. They were really nice cats who definitely made me smile!
Ellie, an adorable Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, from Lakeville, MN has been a client of mine for years. We go on daily mid-day walks while her mommy and daddy are at work. She in not only cute and charming – I refer to her as the “Belle of the Neighborhood” because she charms everyone she comes in contact with (not to mention all her suitors who go wild when she walks by) but she also makes me laugh with her array of toys and stuffed animals that she likes to take on our walks.
Here are a few photos of Ellie walking with her prized possessions.
I was thrilled to get the painting of my cat, Motor Scooter. It was everything I had hoped for and more.
My friend, Jeri Smith, had posted some fabulous paintings that her father, Glen Smith, had created. The paintings were of dogs (people’s pets) and wildlife: Lions, Giraffes, Turtles and more. I was blown away by Glen’s work and loved the style of his paintings. I wondered if Glen might paint my tabby cat, Motor Scooter. He graciously accepted to paint this outstanding portrait of my beloved cat, which turned out to be a surprise gift for my husband’s birthday. The painting also depicts his guitar, making it even more meaningful. We will always treasure this painting.
Meet my Special Pet.
I had the pleasure of taking care of one incredibly cute, charming and talented kitten last weekend. His name is Ricky, and to take one look at him, will make anyone fall instantly in love. He lives in Lakeville, MN with his loving family who adore Ricky as much as do.
Not only is he as cute as a button, but it became apparent to me that he was also very talented, in a way that most cats are not. You see, Ricky must be part dog. He actually fetches and brings things directly upon request.
